The multi-strand necklace style is believed to have originated from the Mesopotamian civilization which existed during the period of around 8000 - 1200 BCE. I think the adoption of this trend can be described under the trickle-across theory as celebrities and normal people alike are spotted wearing layers of chains and/or beads around their neck.
