Given an assignment by Ms.Nela to find someone random that can be trendy and fashionable, I together with Nicole and Kristine decided to go trendspotting outside of Makati city. There can be no other place to spot a fashionista in broad daylight other than Shangri-la Plaza with its upscale designer boutiques.

We checked out Mango, Warehouse, and the ever famous Zara. But my luck turned out when we got to the Ramp and I found this girl who was quite corky for your normal or usual shopping clothes.
She was wearing a loose floral top paired with a bandage black skirt and an army boots. On her shoulder was a black Chanel bag that definitely matches her outfit and style. I then approached her and quickly ask for her picture. She felt awkward at first, but she then did not hesitate afterwards.

The history of Floral can be dated back to the Mid 1800's. It would rise and wade from time to time, a clear signal that it is indeed a trend. Lately, it sparked again in the 1990's and did rose more from 2006. According to fashion directory website at http://girldir.com/fashion-trends/military-fashion-trend,it says that "With all that’s going on in the world the military trend couldn’t be more present-day and that’s why this look refuses to submit as it keeps evolving into new variations. This season designers took their inspiration browsing through every military uniform era in the archives. From Napoleonic styled jackets with high stand collars to gold bordered hussar influenced garments to admiral coats, the military jacket is a winter fashion statement. "

As you notice, what she did was to mix both the variety of her top and shoes, being feminine and masculine respectively, in a way that both complements each other. Her lose top blended well with her bondage skirt that gave her a nice appeal.

From my perspective, the floral and military trend is at its peak because as I see it, everyone is wearing it from all classes of society, whether it be the upscale to the low-key.

I have also seen in television some celebrities sporting military styles which shows that it is not only for real military men. I would say that all ages of women from your friend to grandmothers would really appreciate having floral clothing. However, for the military outfits, limited consumers might be considering this because of its provocative look.

I believe this trends would evolve through time. <3

Grunge takes MNL by Nicole B. Ramos

The last thing you would expect for a model to be wearing even on her days-off would have to be extremely laidback clothing--- No formfitting clothes or killer stilettos or flashy accessories. This model I bumped into in Shangri-La mall was in an outfit just like that. Yet surprisingly, the ensemble still had appeal. Her striped scarf lazily hung around her neck, printed olive green mini, loose cotton sweater, oversized leather bag and green combat boots screamed nothing but grunge.
As a style that’s alive and kicking, grunge can be considered a classic in a sense, that keeps coming back and is continually appreciated by fashionistas regardless of the era. Originating from the late 1980’s, grunge was a way of describing bands from Seattle such as Nirvana and all the crazy stunts at their rock shows. The band going wild on stage, smashing guitars, kicking the sound system, head-banging and crowd-surfing were all uniquely from this style. But how did putting all that emotion into music translate into fashion? The grunge dress code was a form of rebellion. The musicians, for example, were just being "themselves" with what they wore, being anti-style and anti-celebrity. All the while, grunge dressers were saying the exact same thing to society and what society dictated. Little did these people know that this anti-style attitude would become a huge hit in the world of fashion.

This style, taken from the masses or the streets and interpreted and made art by designers, is of the Trickle-Up Theory. The style once started by ordinary, young kids who wanted the no-frill fashion, soon got the runway. The modern grunge that was seen on the S/S ’09 catwalks of Balmain and Diesel, Ashish and Alexander Wang showed that even if fashion may seem to have a consisten 20-year cycle, grunge is something that people really come back to. The Fall/Winter 2010 collections of H&M, Complot and Alexander Wang all show touches of grunge. Even Kate Moss at Rag & Bone showed off her morning-after-the-night-before hair that had grunge written all over it.

Even with the modern takes on this style, the key elements are present:
    ·         Dark colors such as black white, gray, forest green, brown and indigo;  Bright and lively colors are a no-no in grunge scenes.
    ·         Long hair worn natural and unfixed
    ·         The flannel shirt
    ·         Stonewashed, ripped or baggy jeans
    ·         Large and chunky shoes like combat boots
    ·         Baggy cardigans
    ·         Hoodies
    ·         Beanie hats

From all this it’s easy to see that grunge can be pulled off by almost anyone: Rock ‘n Roll fans who want to relive their youth, the teens and adults of today who enjoy the no-style style that this look is all about. And it goes to show that grunge fashion is easy and cheap, which is why the style was born in the first place.

Blueprint in BootPrints... By J. Co

Early last week in Glorietta, I dropped by The Ramp. As I quickly brushed through the dresses, I made a stop in the accessories area. Without a second, I hardly took my eyes off from a woman clad in an embellished bold floral top tucked in a high waisted denim with matching neon orange neck piece and printed shoes. Later did I discover that she is the designer of Cosmopolitan Clothing, the Chanel inspired stall that caught my attention. Accessory designer Ann Ong definitely did not look like the mom of Philippine Fashion designer John Paras, as she graced flavour and spice in her dainty yet hip outfit.

Spotted in Makati as well, I saw this young foreigner sporting an animal print overall vibe complemented by her military green suede boots. She is none other than Monalisa Neuboeck, a Philippine model from Germany who is very fond of animal prints ever since. She confessed,  "animal prints would always be a part of me."

After I left The Italian Festival Fashion Show held in Rustan Gallery late last week, I took a snapshot of Philippine Model Association of the Philippines' models who graced the runway. On the leftmost, Sanya Smith is rocking in her black with metallic embellishment top plus her unique, military inspired like boots whilst Valerie De Los Santos on the center is comfortably clad in white polo top with jet black latex leggings and stunning boots. On the rightmost, Marina Benipayo is in her dainty little black dress and animal print ballet flats.

From my spotted models and designer, I would say the most application fashion leadership theory is the trickle down as not everybody can pull off the outfits they have worn. By profession, I would consider them as fashion leaders since the fashion pieces they wore and model are adopted by the majority. Nonetheless, I find my catches as early adopters in the trend cycle since what they wore are gradually increasing in population.

    Mini Trend Guide

    • Animal Prints  Leopard spots, snakeskin, and tiger stripes—designers took a walk on the wild side for pre-fall 2010. Animal prints showed up on bags, boots, scarves, and gloves (at Dolce & Gabbana and Emilio Pucci); metallic and sequined skinny trousers, one-shoulder dresses, and jumpsuits (at Stella McCartney); and head-to-to looks (at Lanvin). Whether its an accent accessory or a full-on statement, we're guessing spots will be a continued theme for fall 2010 (http://www.coutorture.com/Pre-Fall-2010-Trend-Animal-Prints-Galore-7290850).

    • Boots  The first name, which comes to mind when you talk about shoe trends for 2010, is booties. Booties are not only comfortable but also look chic and stylish. Moreover, they are available in different versions ranging from fancy, retro, trendy, and sleek. They would go with anything you wear, be it skirt, pants, jeans to dresses and would up the style quotient by high measures (http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/shoes-in-2010-6277.html).

    • High Waisted Denim  High-waisted denim is coming back in style, but the modern look of the high-waisted jean is striking a different tone in its modern form. High-waisted denim today is part of a look that’s preppy and sweet at the same time (http://www.www.helium.com/items/1857572-fashion-trends-high-waisted-denim).

    • Floral  Flowered patterns have dominated most spring summer 2010 runways, in particular the ones that took place in Milan Fashion Week. Looks like again, designers are going back to basics and they show their understanding to the women wanting to accentuate their feminity. Floral look ideas for Spring Summer 2010 season include bright and juicy floral prints and floral embellishments on the clothes (http://fashion-allure.com/style/floral-print-spring-summer-2010-trend/).

    • Orange  Orange-red, this is the most important color scheme for summer-ready shoes. Using that as a basis, try different shades like fire engine red or burnt orange. As long as it’s bright, pop-y and bold, it’s a go (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideLifestyle.htm?f=2009/october/12/lifestyle4.isx&d=/2009/october/12).

    • Neon  These neon styles are all about "peacocking" and prove you don't have to spend a lot of money to say "Look at me!" Bold wardrobes are all what you wear, not who you wear. These fashions express that subtly is out, and big and bold is in (http://www.trendhunter.com/trendreports).

CIAO! Till next time, Johanah Co ^_^

Trend spotting by Jiwon(Amy) Jung

In this season,The denim & printed T-shirt is in fasion.

Actually, the denim was populared from long time ago.

In 1853, Levi Strauss was made denim pants for miner.

So that's a start of century of denim.

And Levi's jeans are became popular in denim.

This model also wear short denim, with checked pastel shade shirt.

It's looks more cool, neat and tidy.

And to express the feeling of summer, she put straw hat on

her head. On her feet, brown colored T-strap sandal is wear.

I think in the trend cycle chart, this is in Decline(late majority). And it weared by from 17 to 30years old women..

Trendspotting at Gateway :D

Spending the afternoon people watching on the day Eclipse is being premiered isn't a fun way to spend today's holiday.

Amidst fangirls wearing their Twilight t-shirts with "Team Edward", "Team Jacob", and "Team Rocket" emblazoned on them, I still had to find somebody who sets a trend and unfortunately, it wasn't that easy.

I was sipping on a tea latte at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf when I chanced on this guy and his family sitting on the table next to mine. So I thought, why the hell not, and took his picture.

The 90's are back with an emphasis on comfort over style, plaids and denim jeans. He's wearing a polo from Banana Republic and jeans from People are people, which are reminiscent of the Grunge fashion that emerged in the 90's and popularized by grunge bands and singers such as Kurt Cobaine.

When you see anybody wearing Vans shoes along with a beanie like he is in the picture, there's a chance that they're sporting skater fashion. With the rise of 90's fashion, I suppose this look would reemerge along with Grunge.

Overall, he seems to be 100% comfortable and confident in his clothes and isn't afraid to show it.

Ancient Trend By: Eia Brozo

In this outfit, Allysa Dazon is wearing a one-side dress from Mango, Shoes by Syrup and her clutch bag from Gucci.

"One-side dress are far from new as there heritage dates back to the toga days of ancient Greece. Whilst the one-shouldered goddess gown is still making headlines on the red carpet, this spring sees short, sassy dresses in bold bright colors such as orange and pink. One-shoulder dresses also take on elements of the cut-out trend, space-age dresses which reveal more flesh." (http://womensfashion.suite101.com/article.cfm/oneshoulder_dress_trend_for_spring_2009)

The One-Side Dress is a Trickle Down Theory because most people in high fashion class are followed by the majority and adopts their fashion and it is also under the Early-Adopter Stage/ Increase in Population, since it came from the "heritage dates" the design increases through copying and adoption of the trend.

Trend spotting 101 by: Monaliza Herradura

I went to different locations to try on the different market areas, and its consumers. I spotted the most common trend of the day, which is the leggings, oversized shirts for women, checkered tops/dresses, and shorts for men, shirts with the map of the Philippines, and cropped jeans/pants for men.

Luckily I spotted this young girl hanging out with her girlfriends. Her name is Jen, she's wearing an oversized shirt from Top shop, leggings and stilettos. The fashion leadership that applies to it was the trickle-up theory, for the oversized shirt and leggings started as a neccessity during the renaissance period, then was adopted by the hunters, cowboys, then later on was used in the aerobics and because of the influence of the movie Flash dance, it was then adopted as a street wear. Her total outfit is in the early majority stage. Usually, all kinds of consumerwould wear leggings, compared to the oversized shirt.

As I went on, and saw that majority of the crowd, were in the same trend, and I couldn't spot anything different, I decided to go with the trend which I've seen a lot for the entire day and mostly street wear.

She's one of those wearing checkered that day. So I approached her, she is wearing shorts from Folded and Hung, and a pair of Glads.

For checkered, I think the fashion leadership that applies to it is the trickle-across and for the trend cycle I think it is in the early majority stage.

In the Art gallery in SM Megamall, I spotted another girl wearing a checkered top and leggings plus a native shoulder bag, and a pair of Havaianas.

    Brief History/Background:

During the 14th and 16th century it was worn by both men and women for warmth and protection throughout the centuries. Patricia Field, a fashion designer, claimed that she invented the modern leggings for women in the late 1970s. It was not until the fitness aerobics craze in the early 1980s that leggings became fashionable as gym-styled street wear for women. Wearing black leggings under long, often diaphanous, skirts was part of a general fashion trend of wearing gym or dance clothes as street wear that evolved with the fitness craze and the influence of the movie Flashdance and the long running Broadway show A Chorus line. A more recent trend has been the wearing of black leggings with miniskirts. By the early 1990s, leggings were actually outselling jeans in many parts of the United States. It was very common to see leggings worn with long oversized t-shirts, oversized sweatshirts or oversized sweaters, slouch socks and Keds. Fashion turned against leggings in the late 1990s. In 2005, leggings made a "comeback" into high fashion, particularly in indie culture, with capri-length leggings being worn with mini skirts and dresses. Men have also begun to wear leggings more frequently in recent years as long underwear, and for more casual physical activities such as walking, hiking, gardening, replacing the old standby, sweatpants. Leggings are also worn as a fashion trend by men on the London elcetro-music scene. At the Marni Men's show during the fall 2007 Fashion Week, outfits with leggings designed solely for men were introduced. Jeggings are a recent variant of leggings. They are leggings that take certain attributes from jeans, such as colour and style and particularly a coloured seam down the side, thus a mixture of the two and hence the adoption of the name "Jeggings".

    Source: Wikipedia

On the other hand, the oversized shirts/polo/boyfriend's shirt came along. That girl borrows from the boys- literally. As to checkered, it is a fabric trend direction for summer 2010, a trend which is often used for spring and summer throughout the centuries.

Simply Chic By Nicky Ku

I chose her because I like the bold and the classic look of a 40's inspired style dress with a strappy flats and an up do look and a finishing touch of a red belt. Its simple and chic and you can wear it in events, by traveling or just feeling fabulous.

For me its a Trickle Down Theory and  Increase in Population ( Early Adopter).

Usually optimistic, likes vintage, elegant, or just loves fabulous dresses ladies would wear  this clothes. :)

Tank Tops will always be on Peak-- By: Kar Sison

It was a Wednesday afternoon when we were assigned to go for a Trend Spotting. My group of friends decided to go hunt around High Street area. We were seated in a bench waiting for some fashionistas to pass by. Until I saw a model-like striking girl. She got a style, of course. But I'm having second thoughts approaching her at first. She doesn't look really approachable, 'coz before I went to her, someone handed her a flier and she didn't entertained the guy giving her a leaflet. But then, I just walk to her, smiling, and “Hi, I’m Kar Sison, student from School of Fashion and The Arts. .uhmmm.. We were asked to spot a trend worn by stylish people. If it’s okay, can I take you a picture?” She smiled and replied, “Sure”. That was the time I continued breathing. Haha! Lol.
She’s wearing a black tank top that looks as comfortable as it is stylish. It is made with soft and breathable fabrics. It’s designed to move with body’s natural flow. Tank tops usually fall under Trickle-up theory that comes from people fashionably on streets. For me, it’s also on Peak. It has always been on Peak since then, so, it will take time to be out of fashion since it’s a modern style that are fashionable enough to wear just about anywhere.

She also mixed accessories on to it like the necklace and bracelet she’s wearing. Plus her fashionable semi-boots added spice on her outfit. Therefore, this girl is good in mixing and matching clothes and knows what’s flattering on her body.

Still groovy at 50! - by Shayne E. Maculi

I was with my friend in Carolina’s – Greenbelt 5 when I decided to look at the people passing by. Then I saw an eye-catching girl with her dad. Without a second thought, I run over to take a picture of her. That’s when I realized that she’s not a teenager and the guy I thought her dad is her husband. I think she’s around 50-55. It was so nice that she still managed to take care of herself and still look fabulous at her age. She’s wearing a sleeveless rompersuit with a dramatic ruffle collar, paired with a Christian Louboutin Privatita platform slingbacks and carrying a plain black tote bag.

    The trend is one-piece romper.

Just to give a brief history of romper suit: Rompers appeared in the United States of America in the early 1900s.[1] They were very popular as playwear for younger children because people thought they were ideal for movement.[2] Rompers were in many ways the first modern casual clothes for children. [3] Styles and conventions varied from country to country. Since 2006 rompers have enjoyed a minor renaissance as a fashionable garment for women. Several designers have presented collections including romper suits and they are offered by many retailers. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romper_suit]

I guess the fashion leadership theory for this is trickle-up theory because rompers started as playwear for younger children since 1900. And it was only in 2006 that rompers were presented and reinterpreted by several designers in their collections. The stage I think is still at it’s peak (Early Majority) because it is more mainstream and comes in various price levels. I guess, the people who will normally wear this is a career woman, maybe likes to go out of town sometimes – the socio-economic status is A, upper B and B, middle class.

Animal Prints + Leather Jacket --by: Mairene E. Muñoz

Spotted! This caught my eye right away. She's wearing Animal Print Dress, Leather Sandals, matched with leather strappy belt and leather jacket.

    Brief History
"Animal prints have long been a popular style for many reasons. For one, they are generally expensive and considered rather exotic; hence they are a symbol of wealth and status. Throughout history, kings and other high people have used animal print rugs and such as as sign of status just as mounted animals are kept as trophies. [2] Animal print became popular for women in the United States in the late 1960s during the Hippie movement." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_print

Trendspotting in Greenbelt [Cielo B. Baraan]

As soon as I spotted this Korean girl in Starbucks hanging out with her girlfriends, I immediately wanted to take her picture! She was wearing a black and white dress with geometric, strappy sandals and a bow clip.

Trickle across would best apply to this kind of trend. I think it's in the Peak or Early majority stage since dresses like these become more mainstream and can be bought in various stores.

Teenagers or yuppies who are practical but still love to dress up would likely buy this kind of outfit. It's simple and trendy at the same time. It can also be worn in any given day with just the perfect shoes and accessories.

I won't be shy in taking a stranger's picture next time. -Jedana Angela C. Orosa

Wearing a floral dress, denim vest, studded flat sandals & carrying a big red handbag.. this girl gave me hope  in submitting my assignment. When you're in Promenade Greenhills on a sunday afternoon (I wasn't able to trend-spot last Wednesday, I wasn't feeling well so I went home early), most of the people you'd see are children with their parents, grandparents & mostly just families spending their time together. And this girl, she's with her parents, brothers & perhaps their driver. I was looking at her & their "driver" was looking at me, probably wondering why I'm looking at his "alaga". That's why I had a hard time taking her picture.. Luckily, they stood for quite a time in front of Hobbes & Landes. But still, I was only able to take her back view.

A brief history of one garment she's wearing, the vest: it was introduced in England through Royal Proclamation on October 7, 1966 by an English King, Charles II. It was a simple straight cut, and close fitting garment made from black cloth with a white silk lining. Promoted personally by the King, it was soon popular with everyone.
Today, vests can be found in different kinds of fabric, with different cuts & designs and is also popular with everyone.

Her whole outfit is in the Early Majority stage as it is already mainstream, available in different stores & comes in various price levels. I would say that the Trickle Up Theory applies to this because this style starts with young people. Teenage girls & ladies in their early twenties would normally wear this when they are out to have fun & just enjoy the day. ^_^

Spotted, Howell in Glorietta 3. He's wearing a plain blue shirt from Penshoppe, Dark washed jeans from Oxygen and black sneakers from Girbaud.

I decided to spot another trend, but this time on a guy. What I liked with his outfit were his shoes. He was wearing a very simple shirt and jeans but the shoes were the ones that made the outfit. Very simple yet clean-looking. Perfect for a day in the mall with friends. Both the shirt and jeans I would say belong to the Early adopter stage because guys don't tire of it and you see them constantly wearing this trend. The shoes though, belong to the innovator stage because in his case the shoes made the whole outfit. This outfit is more likely to be see on teenage boys out during the day in the mall or somewhere else.

Trend spotting meant a small reunion for me...by Aoui Cabrera

Okay so we were asked to go to greenbelt to spot trendy fashionistas of Manila today. Unfortunately we only saw a few and we felt that it was not enough. Maybe because it was not the best time to spot in that mall. I only saw two and lucky me one of them used to be an ABS-CBN artist. She carried her outfit well not because she’s pretty but because of the way she mixed things up. This made her stand out for me… Simple yet catchy. She wore a scarf over a simple top paired with jeans. And fantabulous shoes to give a kick to her outfit… oops and not to forget a snake's skin bag which is becoming a hit again…It is something I would definitely wear. anyway I was so frustrated that day because I was really looking for more. Some one who’s gonna give me the ‘wow’ factor. Someone who is so shot and blog worthy if you know what I mean..But don't get me wrong I like this outfit as well, I just feel like I want to look for more. It was sooo hot that day and we were walking around and suddenly I just gave up and I said to myself okay Powerplant it is. I live near it and I know that every time I go there fashionable people are just around..

Fortunately while I was having dinner at Gourmet to go I saw my high-school friend Sue Ong, passed by in front of our table.. the first thing that register to me was that, 'hey that’s a shot worthy outfit.' That is something I would wear and that’s definitely what I will put in my blog. By the way she works for Rockwell’s marketing group, thus the corporate-ish outfit. All of a sudden trend spotting became a small reunion for me and my friend, whom i have not seen for quite some time.

So she is wearing a top that has a Jabot collar paired with a high-waisted trousers with a purple belt, to have some sort of a ‘breaker’ for the outfit. Im so loving her bag and shoes. Everything had harmony. Classy, elegant, still fashion forward and professional. Definitely my style!! hehe=) By the way, Jabot collar is a standing collar with a pleated, ruffled, or lace trimmed frill down the front. Oxford English dictionary traces collar in its modern meaning to 1300. Todays shirt collars descend from the ruffle created by the drawstring at the neck of the medieval chemise through the Elizabethan ruff and its successors, the whisk collar and falling band. The fashion leadership that applies to this trend is trickle across. I believe that this trend is recurring. It comes and it goes back too often. So my point is whether it’s not the trendiest thing now in the so called trend cycle chart it’s still a hit for me. You just have to know what to pair it with. Working professionals, who definitely do not want to look boring will be the best target market for this type of style. Which is obviously my friend=)

Trend spotting - palomaescalona

Spotted, Lissa Kahayon in Greenbelt 3 cinemas. She was wearing a lace top paired with customized high-waisted shorts and caged heels.

She decided to add a feminine touch to her outfit by wearing a lace top with a pair of tan-colored high-waisted shorts to add a little edge to the outfit, according to her she was inspired to dress that way beacause she was expecting to see the guy she had a crush on that afternoon. Her outfit was appropriate for that day since it was really hot outside, and she was out with her girlfriends to watch a movie I suppose. The lace top was an example of an early adopter trend, since a lot of women now wear it. The high-waisted shorts and the caged heels would be in the Early majority stage because they both are seen in different stores and come in various price levels. This outfit is likely to be seen on the younger and trend conscious women.
